Bangkok’s New Cross-River Cable Car Connecting Asiatique and Charoen Nakhon
A new way to cross the Chao Phraya River is taking shape. On 10 July 2026, Asset World Corporation (AWC) announced plans to invest more than THB 2 billion in a cross-river cable car connecting Asiatique The Riverfront on the Charoen Krung side with a new mixed-use development on Charoen Nakhon Road. The project is intended to do more than provide another way across the river. It forms part of AWC’s wider plans for Bangkok’s riverside, bringing attractions, art, dining and activities on both banks into closer connection.

Where Will the Cable Car Connect?
The project is being developed under the concept of a Sustainable Cross-River Themed Cable Car, with plans to use energy-efficient technology and a design that requires no supporting pillars in the middle of the Chao Phraya River. AWC also intends the journey itself to become part of the experience through a Kinetic Art concept combining art, light, sound, technology and architecture. Early plans are studying a height of around 50 metres above the river, alongside possible features such as a viewing platform, Zip Line and Chairlift. These elements remain under study before the project moves into detailed design and approval stages.

A New Development and MONA Bangkok in Charoen Nakhon
On the Charoen Nakhon side, the cable car will connect with AWC’s planned development around Charoen Nakhon 59, on a site reported to cover approximately 20 rai. The mixed-use project is expected to include hotel, retail and cultural components, with MONA Bangkok among its key attractions. Developed in collaboration with the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania, the project will bring together contemporary art, technology and immersive experiences interpreted specifically for Bangkok. This means the cable car will connect directly into a new riverside destination rather than simply ending at a transport station.

AWC’s Wider Plans for Both Sides of the River
The cable car is part of a broader programme of riverside development. Asiatique The Riverfront is being expanded beyond shopping and dining to include more entertainment, art and cultural experiences, while the Charoen Nakhon side is set to gain MONA Bangkok and the new mixed-use development. This will add to an area that already includes ICONSIAM, luxury hotels, restaurants and riverside condominiums. If completed as planned, the new connection could make it easier for visitors to move between Asiatique and Charoen Nakhon and spend time across both sides of the river as part of the same day or evening out.

What Could This Mean for Charoen Nakhon?
For Charoen Nakhon, the impact may extend beyond the cable car itself. The neighbourhood already benefits from ICONSIAM, the Gold Line, river transport, restaurants and hotels, and the arrival of MONA Bangkok together with a direct connection to Asiatique would introduce even more options for dining, art, entertainment and leisure. Current reports suggest that the cable car could take around 3 years to develop if the project progresses as planned. For existing riverside residences such as The River by Raimon Land, these developments could add more destinations and activities to the surrounding area while retaining the appeal of living directly beside the Chao Phraya River.
