With a wide range of residential accommodation, and exciting bars, cafes and restaurants, this neighborhood is popular among both wealthy middle-class Thai’s as well as expats from all over the world. The Ekkamai area manages to strike an enviable balance between the lively and vibrant culture it has created, and a blend of shopping facilities and quiet streets in a prime Sukhumvit location making it one of the city’s most desirable places to live.

Soi Ekkamai runs adjacent to the popular Soi Thonglor and is thus often considered an extension of the affluent Thonglor neighborhood. The residential Ekkamai area encompasses Sukhumvit Sois 59-65 and Soi 42 offering a peaceful and serene living environment. The main public transportation hub is the BTS (Skytrain) Ekkamai Station on the Sukhumvit (Light Green) Line, providing quick access to all of Sukhumvit Road and beyond. For the more adventurous, a public ferry boat stops at the Charn Issara Pier along the Saen Saep Canal. Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal is located on Sukhumvit Road next to BTS Ekkamai, providing access to Pattaya and other destinations along the Eastern Seaboard.

Condominium pricing in the Ekkamai area is marginally less expensive than in adjacent Thonglor. Prices average between THB 180,000-220,000 per square meter. Recent projects include:

In addition to the many boutique lifestyle malls available in nearby Thonglor - including J Avenue, Seenspace and The Commons – Ekkamai residents can shop at the local Gateway Ekkamai, adjacent to the BTS station, and sample the many Japanese restaurants. Also in the area are Big C Ekkamai, Major Cineplex Sukhumvit, and Park Lane. A Foodland Supermarket is within easy reach on Petchaburi Road.

Ekkamai offers a wide variety of excellent Asian and Western dining options, it is often described as a toned-down version of Thonglor and is well-known for its quaint eateries. Some of the more popular venues are:

  • The Gardens at Dinsor Palace, a pan-European restaurant in a former Royal mansion.
  • In the Mood for Love, a romantic fusion sushi bar and bistro.
  • Theera: The Original Healthy Bake Room, serving vegan and gluten-free meals and snacks.
  • Stage, an elegant dining room that promises sophisticated French fare with global influences. 
  • Kaizen Coffee, serving full-on meals in a two-story glasshouse-style building focusing on the character of coffee beans and offering customers a true coffee experience.
  • Pizzeria Mazzie, a popular pizza spot with natural levain sourdough, wood-fired pizza & bread.

 

 

NightLife
 

If you're in the mood for a relaxing drink and some good vibes or are tempted by the excitement of nightclubs scattered across this vibrant neighborhood, the following destinations are recommended:

  • Sugar Ray, the speakeasy from the masterminds behind Q&A and Thaipioka. 
  • Tuba Bar, with a great selection of European draft beers.
  • Mikkeller Bar, a large variety of craft beers on tap.

For a more energetic atmosphere, try these venues:

  • DND Club (Do No Disturb), an outstanding dance club with a retro motel theme.
  • Nunglen & Escobar, two nightclubs in one complex.
  • Violett, a hip nightclub bathed in vibrant neon lights.
  • Penta, a brand-new hip-hop nightclub.
  • Beam, a pioneer in the clubbing movement in Bangkok aiming to introduce Bangkok to a new wave of sound.
     

Leisure & Culture


With world-class health and fitness equipment at your disposal and a variety of entertaining family-friendly activities, there is always something to do in Ekkamai. 

A variety of recreational activities are available at the Gateway Ekkamai, adjacent to BTS. Flight Experience Bangkok is a realistic Boeing 737 flight simulator. Kidzoona is a delightful indoor children’s playground. Snow Town offers a great escape from hot weather in Bangkok with a themed village in artificial snow.

Major Cineplex Sukhumvit, connected to BTS Ekkamai Station, features eight movie screens (including 3D), a bowling alley and a sub-zero ice-skating rink. The Science Centre for Education, near Sukhumvit Soi 40, is home to Bangkok Planetarium and many nature exhibits. 

Health Land Spa & Massage, on Soi Ekkamai, is a massage and spa center that's popular with local Thais and foreigners. Beautiful Wat That Thong is a short walk from BTS Ekkamai.

Nearby Ekkamai, you can find The Racquet Club on Sukhumvit Soi 49/9, a family exercise center that includes fitness equipment, tennis, badminton and squash courts, a swimming pool, billiards and snooker tables, rock climbing walls and other activities. RSM Academy, on the second floor of Seenspace, on Thonglor Soi 13 is a well-known Thai boxing (muay Thai) school. Beautiful Benjasiri Park is just two BTS stops away, at Phrom Phong.
 

Education and Healthcare


Schools in the Ekkamai area include Pathum Kongka, Darakam, Ekkamai International, Kids' Academy International, Bright Skies International, Thawsi and Thai Christian School, and ACACIA Bilingual Educational Centre, a nursery school. There is also easy access to Thai-Japanese Association School in Rama 9, and Bangkok Prep International School in Thonglor.
