Hua Lamphong - Sam Yan

 

Located along Rama 4 Road from Sala Daeng Junction to Hua Lamphong Railway Station (which provides passenger rail services to all parts of Thailand), the Hua Lamphong – Sam Yan neighborhood is served by MRT (subway) Blue Line stations at Sam Yan, Hua Lamphong and Silom (which connects to the BTS Skytrain Silom Line). In 2019, the MRT was extended west to Chinatown and across the river into Thonburi and beyond. This neighborhood is popular among locals, especially for Chulalongkorn University staff and students.

The Hua Lamphong – Sam Yan neighborhood will see significant infrastructural developments in the coming years with the THB 100 billion mass transit the monorail Grey Line and Bang Sue Grand Station developed nearby. Bang Sue Grand Station opened in 2021 and is the biggest mass transit hub in Thailand. Additionally, the new Red Line service also opened in 2021 connects central Bangkok with Rangsit to reduce inner-city congestion in the Hua Lamphong – Sam Yan area.

Chamchuri Square, near MRT Sam Yan, includes a lifestyle mall. I'm Park, at Chulalongkorn Soi 20, is packed with unique local restaurants. Excellent fresh produce is available at Sam Yan Market and Saphan Luang Market, both near Chulalongkorn University Stadium. There's a Foodland supermarket in Patpong near MRT Silom Station, and a Metro Mall in the MRT Khlong Toei Station. The MRT also provides easy access to Terminal 21 (Sukhumvit Station) and Fortune Town IT and Electronics Mall (Rama 9 Station). North of Chulalongkorn University near BTS National Stadium Station is Tokyu Department Store and MBK, a massive shopping complex with over 2,000 retail outlets.

NightLife
 

Nightlife around Chulalongkorn University is somewhat limited to cafes and coffee shops because of laws prohibiting alcohol sales near educational establishments. Several bars are clustered near MRT Hua Lamphong Station, at Soi Nana near Charoen Krung Road. Teens of Thailand is a cozy bar specializing in gins and gin cocktails. TEP BAR serves unique cocktails made with Thai liquors, plus live music. El Chiringuito is a tapas bar, popular with Europeans. 23 Bar & Gallery is a hipster bar with art exhibitions. Soulbar, a bit further south on Charoen Krung Road is a cozy place with live music.

Many nightclubs and bars are located around Surawong Road and Patpong near MRT Sam Yan and Silom Stations. At Surawong about 50 meters from Rama 4 Road is Thaniya Road, with numerous bars and clubs catering to Japanese clientele. A bit further down Surawong is a cluster of provocatively named gay bars (Fresh Boys Bar, Banana Bar). Yet a bit further is the Surawong entrance to the Patpong complex of bars, clubs, restaurants and shops.

 

Culture and Leisure

 

The Bangkokian Museum, at Soi Charoen Krung 43 near Maha Set Road, offers an insight into the lifestyles of well-off Bangkok residents during and immediately after World War II. Nearby Lumpini Park, stretching from MRT Silom to Lumpini Stations, is the neighborhood's primary green space, offering walking and jogging trails, playgrounds, and a lake where boats can be rented. Wat Traimit, near MRT Hua Lamphong at Tri Mit Road, is an ornate Thai temple with a large golden Buddha statue. Wat Hua Lam Phong is located on Rama 4 Road.
 

Education, Healthcare and Religion

 

The sprawling Chulalongkorn University campus is at the center of this neighborhood. Other local schools are Triam Udom Suksa School, Pathumwan Demonstration School, Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Secondary School, Praserttham Wittaya School, Trimit Wittayalai Boy's School, Hua Lamphong School and Debsirin School. There's also an AUA Language Center in Chamchuri Square near MRT Sam Yan Station.

The largest neighborhood hospital is King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital at MRT Silom Station. Other amenities nearby include Samitivej Chinatown Hospital at Yaowarat Road and Kwong Siew Foundation Hospital at Charoen Krung Road.
Neighborhood churches include the Second Church Samyan, Saphan Luang Church, Bangkok Seventh-Day Adventist Chinese Church and Thiensung Church (Assemblies of God). Also nearby is Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
